IOWA LAKES BECOMES FIRST LEGAL ASSISTANT PROGRAM

IN THE STATE TO USE ‘IOWADOCS’

The Legal Assistant program at Iowa Lakes Community College has become the first program in the state authorized to use ‘IowaDOCs’ – a state-of-the-art computerized legal form program to produce official legal documents, from the Iowa State Bar Association.

“This is a great benefit to our students as they now will have all four of the most widely used research and writing tools used by attorneys at their disposal,” said Dennis Francis, Legal Studies Instructor/Coordinator.

Attorneys from across the state often use the Westlaw and Lexis research services, in addition to IowaDOCs to more efficiently serve their clients.

“The addition of these items to our existing book library will give our graduates the experience and training most sought after by their future employers,” said Francis.

An open house to view these tools will be scheduled sometime after the start of fall classes.  Also after the start of classes, experts from all three organizations will be on campus to train students in the use of their products.

“Adding these resources to an upgraded text collection, including law school texts used at both Creighton and Drake Law Schools for research courses, give Iowa Lakes graduates a distinct edge in their training for employment, not only in law firms, but other legal related fields,” Francis said.

The Legal Assistant/Legal Studies program is based at the Estherville campus.  Students take two years of classes, plus work experience, and earn an Associate in Science degree.
