COLLEGE PROGRAM TO BENEFIT WITH AIRPLANE HANGAR

The Board of Trustees of Iowa Lakes Community College agreed at their monthly meeting Tuesday night in Estherville to continue talks concerning the possible purchase of an existing airplane hangar (and the property it sits on) at the Estherville City Airport to accommodate the fast-growing Aviation program at the college.  The hangar is owned by Purina Mills and, with the closing of the Golden Sun offices in Estherville, the firm is eager to find a buyer.  With the Aviation program growing with increased enrollments each year, it’s a good match.  More action is expected at the next board meeting.

The Iowa Lakes Report featured the Allied Health Programs.  Heidee Barrett, Steve Dobbins and Martha Olson shared the success of their programs in recent years.  Courses taught by Iowa Lakes include First Responder and EMS courses; Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA); and Home Care Aide, among others.  Gene Haukoos, Estherville, told the board about the classes he’s taken through the college and expressed his appreciation that the courses are available locally.

Also during the meeting, the Trustees set the date of September 17 for a public hearing on a new Student Center Building at the Estherville Campus.  This will follow the deadline for receiving bids on the project, which is Sept. 10.

And, the Trustees accepted three 260 F Retraining projects which included Goodenow Bancorporation in Okoboji; Art’s-Way Manufacturing Company, Inc. of Armstrong; and, Metz Manufacturing Company, Inc. of Emmetsburg.

In other business, the Trustees approved the hiring of two new instructors and other personnel for the college year; and, heard reports from fellow board members on college, state and regional committees and boards.

The next meeting of the Iowa Lakes Board of Trustees will be Tuesday, Sept. 17th in Estherville.
