FAMED SPEAKER SETS EMMETSBURG APPEARANCE

A man who has overcome physical and mental adversity will be featured at an event planned for Emmetsburg in September.

Lt. Clebe McClary’s speech outlines his time in the U.S. Marine Corps when he was injured in combat during Vietnam.  Not only did McClary lose an eye and his left arm, there was concern that he would never walk again.  Now, as an avid runner, his life is a perfect example of how to conquer adversity through enthusiasm, discipline and the will to succeed.

“I first heard Lt. McClary in 1976 in San Diego, Calif.,” said Laurie Schmidt, Talent Search Director at Iowa Lakes Community College.  “His message stuck with me all those years and when I had a chance to hear him again earlier this year, his message was even more powerful.  I decided we had to have him speak in northwest Iowa.”

McClary’s message is applicable to all ages.

“He will leave a lasting impression on you,” Schmidt said.  “He makes you appreciate all the abilities that you have.”

The speech is open to the public free of charge.  Continuing education certificates are available for those who desire certified training for their professional development (at a cost of $20).  To attend the event, please call 1-800-252-5664 to reserve a seat.  The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 15th in the gymnasium at the Wellness Center of Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg.

“People who come to this event will not be disappointed,” Schmidt said.

The recipient of three Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star, McClary uses motivation and humor to inspire his audiences to greatness.  His life is living proof of the vow he took upon entering the Marine Corps.  He vows that any mission assigned will be accomplished in a superior manner, no matter what the obstacles.

Individuals with questions may contact Laurie Schmidt, Talent Search Director, at 1-800-242-5108 ext. 340 or (712) 852-5340.  Lt. McClary’s appearance is being sponsored by Talent Search, a federal TRIO program administered by Iowa Lakes Community College.
