For the third year, Student Senators at Iowa Lakes Community College will be holding a Soles4Souls shoe drive, an outreach project to benefit both disabled and underprivileged individuals. The drive will be held on all Iowa Lakes campuses as well as the Administration building April 8 - 19.
The project is a partnership with Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon. After the collection at Iowa Lakes, the shoes will be taken to Village Northwest where preparing them for distribution to those in need will provide work opportunities for 180 people with disabilities. Soles4Souls currently distributes shoes in 125 countries and distributes a pair of shoes every 9 seconds.
“This is a great opportunity for students to be involved with a meaningful service project that will ultimately benefit many people,” said Emmetsburg Campus Student Senate Advisor Bill Lapczenski. “I think most people have a pair of shoes they don’t wear anymore that are in good condition, and we’re asking them to donate them. We will have collection boxes at each Iowa Lakes campus and the Administration building in Estherville from April 8 - 19,” he added.
Anyone wishing to donate shoes - including the general public - can drop them off at any Iowa Lakes campus or the Administration building in Estherville during regular business hours throughout the drive. Donors are asked to tie shoes together by the shoelaces, or bind them with a rubber band before placing them in the collection boxes.
