A Spirit Lake woman’s electronic holiday card has been selected to be used for Iowa Lakes Community College.
Kristina Phillips, who is just completing her first year in the Web Development and Design program, designed the winning entry.
This is the third year that students in the Flash Class, taught by Kevin Grems, have competed to design a holiday e-card for Iowa Lakes.
Kristina came into the program with a background in design. She was a graphic designer for Farleys and Sathers, but when the company closed its facility, she needed to make a decision.
“I decided to take some time and go back to college to learn the web design software to add to my design skills,” Kristina said. “I chose Iowa Lakes for the Web Design program and also because I wouldn’t have to relocate to attend classes.”
She’s happy with her decision.
“I’ve always been a creative person and always knew that I needed a creative career to be happy,” she said.
Kristina specifically wanted to take the Flash class.
“I wanted to learn how to animate and bring life to my illustrations to create videos,” she said.
She’d recommend the Flash class to others because students don’t need to learn a lot of coding.
While she knows the computer programs well, she ran into some glitches – much like anyone who uses a computer.
“Probably my biggest stumbling block was dealing with some things in the Flash program itself not working the way I wanted it to,” she said.
The holiday e-card represents all of the campuses at Iowa Lakes and features some of Kristina’s own art work.
“I knew that in order to represent the different campuses, I wanted to show images of the buildings which meant that it would be an outdoor scene – and the idea just grew from there,” she said.
Images on the card include Santa Claus shaking a ‘snow globe’ as well as Santa and his reindeer gliding through the skies.
Interested individuals may view the e-card here. At the conclusion of the e-card, the viewer may choose to watch it again.
