The Lakers Swimming and Diving coaching staff is starting an AAU/USA Dive club. The goal of the Laker Aquatics Dive Club is to provide a competitive and fun atmosphere for practices and competition.

It’s new to the region.

“Some may not know about AAU and USA diving as we will be the only type of team in northwest Iowa,” said Johnathan Jordan, Head Swim Coach. “The closest team is in Ames.”

AAU is one of the largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations in the United States. They offer many different types of sport organizations. Their goal is to be a dedicated organization that promotes and develops amateur athletes and their physical fitness.

Laker Aquatics requires athletes to be at least the age of 10 along with being able to confidently swim in the deep end. With Laker Aquatics Dive Club athletes will be required to obtain an AAU athlete Membership with additional AAU insurance before they will be allowed to participate. These memberships are $16 per year.

“Not only will this membership allow the athletes to compete in AAU sanctioned events it will also allow them to be covered under Laker Aquatics Insurance,” Diving Coach Amber Sorgea said.

Laker Aquatics will be having an informational meeting on May 13 at 4p.m. at the Emmetsburg campus of Iowa Lakes Community College in room 800. Sorgea will be there to answer any questions and explain how practices will work. Athletes will be able to sign up at that time for practices which will start on May 20. There will be several practice times that divers will be able to choose from.

“I am thrilled to be able to provide this type of sport and opportunity to northwest Iowa.” Coach Sorgea said. “It is something that I grew up with and would love to provide the same experiences I had growing up around the sport.”

For more information you can reach Sorgea for questions at either 712-852-5357 or 618-520-3232. She can also be reached via email at sorgeaa@iowalakes.edu.

Students in two programs at Iowa Lakes Community College are benefiting from a partnership with an area business.

Spencer International worked with college faculty to provide the Farm Equipment and Diesel Technology students an opportunity to assemble and set-up a new Kinze planter, which enhances hands-on learning.

“Ron Mader contacted me last spring. He’s an Iowa Lakes alumni and has a tremendous passion for quality,” said Jolene Rogers, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement. “We got the right people together, and as a result, Ron had a 3200 series Kinze planter delivered to the Emmetsburg campus for the students to assemble. Then, this spring, our Agricultural students will use it to plant crops at the College Farm Laboratory.”

The work for the Farm Equipment and Diesel Technology students started in January.

“This offers the students a real-life experience – just like they would face when they work at a dealership,” said Dan Bredeson, Farm Equipment and Diesel Technology instructor. “In January, we received five pallets of equipment along with a big frame for the planter.”

The students got busy assembling the 3200 Series, 12-row Kinze planter in time for it to be used at the College Farm Lab this spring.

Before being put into use, the planter will undergo an inspection to ensure it’s in top operating condition.

“Having a new planter is just one more way we make certain our students get a chance to work with a variety of equipment as well as an opportunity to see the benefits of up-to-date and well-maintained machinery,” said Tom Quastad, Agronomy Instructor.

Tom Brotherton, Executive Dean of the Emmetsburg campus says the Iowa Lakes Farm Lab offers a wide range of experiences for those taking Agricultural classes.

“This opportunity supports the College’s mission in several ways, with educational opportunities and assistance from area businesses, a pattern that is welcomed throughout the various farm enterprises, including crops, forage, cattle and swine,” Brotherton said.

After the planting season, the planter will be serviced by the Farm Equipment and Diesel Technology students and returned to Spencer International.

“We look forward to similar opportunities in future years,” Brotherton said.

Iowa’s 15 Community Colleges Join Forces for First Time to Improve Advanced Manufacturing Workforce

Officials from all 15 Iowa community colleges assembled today at the headquarters of ACT in Iowa City to announce an unprecedented opportunity to help improve the state’s manufacturing workforce. The Iowa Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (I-AM) is an Iowa community college initiative to elevate advanced manufacturing, funded through a previously announced $13 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant Program.

I-AM will collaboratively build training capacity by developing non-credit and credit programs to help individuals earn industry-recognized credentials, diplomas and degrees for careers in Iowa’s advanced manufacturing sector.

A key component of I-AM will be to capitalize on ACT’s Tomorrow’s Workforce Now (TWN) program, a national drive to bridge the gap in workplace skills. Designed to help place a set of proven ACT workforce solutions into the hands of business leaders and inspire collaboration among employers and community colleges, TWN also helps individuals document their strengths and earn credentials as they define a career path for their future. The I-AM initiative will target current and prospective advanced manufacturing employees through an assessment process. Additionally, any Iowa resident pursuing employment in any industry sector can take NCRC assessments at no cost as part of Gov. Terry Branstad’s Skilled Iowa Initiative.

ACT will provide assessments and nationally recognized workplace credentials to qualified individuals participating in the statewide program. ACT will support the initiative with thousands of ACT WorkKeys® assessments, through which test takers may earn the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate Plus (NCRC™ Plus).

I-AM is inviting Iowa advanced manufacturing employers to engage in the benchmarking of required occupational skills to strengthen the talent pipeline of current and future workers. Because advanced manufacturing typically involves high-tech products and processes, the skills required of workers in this segment are often more advanced than those in other settings. To secure an opportunity for participation, companies are asked to contact their local I-AM representative by May 15th.

Employer engagement in I-AM initiatives will benefit thousands of Iowans interested in a career in advanced manufacturing. Each community college will administer assessments for the program and enhance both credit and non-credit programs to support manufacturing careers. Also, hundreds of participating employers will have an opportunity to measure and benchmark the skill sets of their employees and applicants.

Manufacturing contributes the largest share of Iowa’s gross domestic product (GDP) at an annual level of $25.4 billion, or nearly 18 percent of the state’s economy. As of March 2012, Iowa’s manufacturing firms supplied 215,600 jobs to Iowans, representing 10.6% of the state’s total employment. Iowa ranks sixth among all states in the percentage of total GDP derived from the manufacturing sector.

Iowa Lakes Students Serve During Spring Break

For the third year in a row, several Iowa Lakes Community College students spent their Spring Break serving others with a week-long Mission Trip to Chicago. Rather than spend the week on the beaches or just enjoying the week off, 39 students decided to work with underprivileged children and served food at homeless shelters.

The students split into teams, serving with three different after-school programs throughout Chicago. The ministries they worked with were New Life Center, By the Hand Club for Kids, and the Center for Higher Development. These ministries all provide workforce development, GED preparation, After School Programs for youth, and other educational resources in underserved communities throughout Chicago. The Iowa Lakes students spent time with the children, helping them with homework, playing games with them, and talking with them about their lives.

Every morning, the students worked for Cornerstone Community Outreach and Pacific Garden Mission, which provide meals and shelter for the homeless and a food pantry for those who can’t afford groceries. This outreach ministry serves over 500 homeless every night and over 2,000 meals every day. The students helped serve meals, make beds, paint, clean, sort donations, and do maintenance work.

“In the past, the students have mainly been from the Estherville campus of Iowa Lakes,” said Brett Fuelberth, one of the faculty advisors for the Laker Life club. “But this year we had six students from the Emmetsburg campus, four from the Spencer campus, and one from the Spirit Lake campus,” he commented.

Rich Keilholtz, another faculty advisor, added “The mission trip helps students grow in their faith, grow closer in fellowship, and teaches them how to serve others in need.”

“It was about teaching us how to serve as much as us serving others. They taught us how we should take care of people in our own community,” added Sara Mukaz, a sophomore from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
