The Iowa Lakes Community College Foundation’s Clay County Scholarship Golf Outing is this Friday and only a few days remain to bid on a hand-built, custom-painted pedal car.
The pedal car is one of a limited number of pedal cars which have been assembled by students in the college’s Auto Collision and Paint Technology program. That means the special car receives a one-of-a-kind PPG® paint mixing system ‘paint job.’
Each year, a handful of pedal cars are assembled by the students. Then, the cars are raffled off with the proceeds going to support the Auto Collision and Paint Technology club.
Some winners have used the cars as outdoor planters or a feature in landscaping. But most bring loads of ‘smiles’ to young children.
That was the case when Nancy Schoenewe, Professor of English and Communications at Iowa Lakes, was the winning bidder at a holiday party a few years ago. She, and her husband Lee, chose to give the pedal car to Nancy’s niece. It was a ‘hit’ and now provides entertainment for Nancy’s nephew.
The car on the silent auction was originally ‘won’ by a person who turned around and re-gifted the car so that proceeds could benefit Clay County students attending Iowa Lakes. The pedal car has a bright red finish with white racing stripes.
It is currently on display at the Spencer campus of Iowa Lakes. Bids will be taken through Thursday by contacting Tony Condon, Event Coordinator, 712-362-0425. It will be taken to the Spencer Municipal Golf Course on Friday for the Golf Outing with the auction ending at the conclusion of the golf event.
Those wishing to participate in the 18-hole, four-person best ball golf tournament may also contact Condon. Registration and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. followed by a noon shotgun start. In addition to the pedal car auction, participants will have the opportunity to take part in games, contests and raffles through the afternoon. One of the raffles is for an iPad 2 with a second name drawn for two Executive Suite tickets to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Winners will be drawn during a short awards program following play and the winners need not be present to win. Tickets may be purchased at the Iowa Lakes Spencer campus or by calling Iowa Lakes Event Coordinator, Tony Condon, at 800-242-5106 ext. 4425.

This custom-painted pedal car is on silent auction through this Friday’s Clay County Scholarship Golf Outing.
As mentioned in the article, Nancy Schoenewe’s niece was the first in her family to receive a pedal car. It is now being put to good use by both the niece and nephew.
