There was plenty of cheering going on Saturday at Iowa Lakes Community College as the FFA chapters from three high schools in Palo Alto County participated in an Ag Quiz Bowl sponsored by the Iowa Corn Growers Association.
Brian Peterson, a representative of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, served as the master of ceremonies for the first-ever Palo Alto Growers Association Quiz Bowl.
The top team was Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. They received $500 for their chapter. The Emmetsburg FFA team finished second and received $350 for their chapter; and, $300 was awarded to West Bend-Mallard FFA chapter for third place. An additional $100 was donated to GT/RA for having the largest audience attendance.
The students demonstrated their knowledge and entertained the audience with their enthusiasm. Each student had a ‘noisemaker’ of some kind and the first to respond to the questions had the chance to earn 40 points for their team. If incorrect, the other two teams had a chance to earn 30 point. If the answers were still incorrect, the remaining team could earn 20 points with the correct answer.
The competition contained three rounds. The first was a multiple choice flight, with GT/RA securing a commanding lead with 570 points. Emmetsburg closed the gap during the second, short answer portion. All three teams posted outstanding responses during the final, essay portion.
Final scores were: GT/RA 1,240 points; Emmetsburg 1,120 points; and, West Bend-Mallard 870 points.
Organizers thanked those who helped make the event a success. They included Ritch Berkland and Mason Hoffman for handling the registration table; Cynthia Berkland, scorekeeper; and judges Neil Ankeny, Dan Chism, Shayne Kogel and Tim Rogers, StateLineCooperative. The college provided the facility and refreshments.
