Massage Therapy Program Proposed for Algona Campus of Iowa Lakes

November 7, 2012

The Massage Therapy program at Iowa Lakes Community College is looking at expanding to the Algona campus. Officials with the college are planning an evening program which would start with the spring term on Jan. 9.

Those interested in pursuing this career path are asked to attend an informational meeting at the Algona campus Tuesday, Nov. 13, from 4-7 p.m. to learn more.

The evening option allows potential students to keep their current jobs while gaining an education for future employment. The plan is for evening classes to be held four nights each week (Mon-Thurs.) from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Course work would be face-to-face classes with some ‘hybrid’ course content where a few components are online.

“Our students gain a solid foundation of massage techniques to start their careers as massage therapists,” said Janet Gentle, Massage Therapy Program Coordinator. “We prepare students to pass the national licensure boards.”

The 11-month diploma program takes students from basic to advanced massage techniques.

Individuals interested in the program are encouraged to attend the informational meeting at which time Janet Gentle and Algona campus supervisor Theresa Waechter will answer questions and help guide potential students through the application process.

The Massage Therapy program is approved by the Iowa Department of Education and the Iowa Board of Examiners for Massage Therapy. The expansion to the Algona campus will mark the start of the ninth year of the program at Iowa Lakes. The program in Spencer will continue.

“Students who graduate from the diploma program are prepared to take the Iowa Licensure exam and be licensed in the state of Iowa,” said Waechter.

Individuals who enjoy the ‘caring professions’ are a good match for this program.

“Interest continues to be strong in the program due to the increased importance in health and wellness, which are regarded as keys to living a longer, healthier life,” said Mark Gruwell, Executive Dean of Instruction and Development.

Those interested in knowing more in advance of the meeting may go online to www.iowalakes.edu and then click on ‘Academic Programs’ and ‘Programs of Study’ where they may select ‘Massage Therapy.’
