The Iowa Lakes Community College Wrestling team is preparing for the 2012- 2013 season under the new direction of Head Coach Cody Alesch.
“We need to stay healthy throughout the year since we do not have a lot of depth at numerous weight classes,” he said. “Each individual will need to work hard to get better every day.”
The sophomores will have a big part in the success of the Lakers.
Nick Lawrence and Skyler Rice are returning National Qualifiers, looking to improve on last season. Other returners such as Glenn Cothren, Nate Lawrence, Travis Johnson and Riley Edwards are working to make statements as they finish out their last year at Iowa Lakes.
“All these guys have been working hard and stepped in as leaders from the time they got back on campus this fall,” Alesch said. “This group will need to push their teammates to get better every day and lead by example on and off the mat.”
Coach Alesch is looking for his freshmen to mature quickly.
“These young men will need to step up like they are upper classman to help their team reach its full potential,” he said. “If they push each other individually and collectively to improve every day, we will have several guys making a name for themselves by the end of the season.”
The schedule for Iowa Lakes is no walk in the park.
“We wrestle in a very tough conference and travel to some large tournaments, which is exactly what I want for my guys,” Alesch said. “We need to compete against the best in the nation every week if we are going to get better both physically and mentally throughout the season.”
