Iowa Lakes Wrestling Announces Recruiting Class

Head Coach Cody Alesch and the Iowa Lakes Wrestling team have announced their 2014-2015 recruiting class. 

“This class seems to be well rounded in the fact they have high goals academically and athletically,” Alesch stated.  “I believe these young men have a desire to compete at a high level and are coming to Iowa Lakes for the right reasons.” 

At weight class 133 the Lakers are adding AJ Rees and Tyler Dion.  

Rees, from Colorado Springs, Colo., is a 3x state champion, 2011 NHSCA National Runner-up, class of 2013 USA Wrestling magazine Honorable Mention All-American, 2014 Fila Jr. All-American, 1-year Olympic Training Center resident, and represented USA in Ilzmir, Turkey at 55kgs. In May of 2014. 

Dion, from Wagner, S.D., is a 4x state participant- placing 7th as a freshman, 4th as a sophomore, 2nd as a junior and being crowned state champion as a senior. 

Andres Gonzalez and Trevor Schermer will be coming in at the 141lb. weight class. 

Gonzalez, from Clear Lake, is a 4x state participant- placing 4th as a freshman, 3rd as a sophomore, 5th as a junior and 2nd as a senior. 

T. Schermer, from Addis, La., is a 4x state champion ending his career with a 182-27 overall record. 

For weight class 149, the Lakers are adding Austin Schermer, Brady Franklin and Andrew Tate. 

A.Schermer, from Addis, La., is a 4x state champion ending his career with a 196-40 overall record compiling 119 falls, was 2012 WIN magazine LA wrestler of the year, 2012 USA high school wrestling Honorable Mention team and 2011 Olympic All-American 4th place finisher. 

Franklin, from Sedalia, Mo., is a 2x District Champion, 2x state participant finishing as high as 2nd as a senior. 

Tate, from Fallbrook, Calif., was a 4th place finisher at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic, 4th place finisher at Div. I CIF tournament and 6th place finisher at CIF Masters tournament. 

At weight class 157, the lone recruit is Jose Rodriguez from St. Paul, Minn. who is a 2x state participant- placing 5th as a junior and 4th as a senior. 

Cody Skog, from Insanti, Minn., is coming in at weight class 165.  He is a 6x state participant- placing three times and being crowned champion as a senior finishing his career with a 211-41 overall record. 

For weight class 174, the Lakers are bringing in Nick Schany an Emmetsburg’s native.  Schany will be transferring to Iowa Lakes from Iowa Western where he competed in football last year. 

Wouvel Chevelon, Joseph Varela and Cameron Womack will be joining the roster at weight 184. 

Chevelon, from West Palm Beach, Fla., is a 2x state participant with a 3rd place finish as a senior. 

Varela, from David City, Neb., is a 4x state participant- placing 3rd as a junior and losing by injury default in the championship match as a senior. 

Womack, from Rosemount, Minn., finished 5th at the Indiana state tournament as a junior and only wrestled half of his senior year in Minnesota due to an injury. 

At weight class 197 the Lakers are adding Jordan Brandon and Ryan Maas. 

Brandon, from Westland, Mich., is a 2014 state champion, 2013 state runner-up, Flo-National 5th place finisher as a junior, 3rd place Flo-National finisher as a senior, was a 2x Observerland and KLAA tournament champion, Disney Duals Gold medalist and competing in the Junior Olympics earning a silver medal finishing with a 14-1 record. 

Maas, from Iowa City, is a 2x state participant- placing 4th as a junior, 3x state freestyle champion, a Greco state champion, and Cadet Fargo National All-American 6th place finisher. 

Rounding out the 2014-2015 recruiting class coming in as the lone 285 pounder is Guy Henson from Avon, Ind., who finished 5th place as a senior at state. 

Along with these 16 athletes, the Lakers have several other talented young freshman coming in. 

“Right now we have over 50 committed wrestlers to the program for the coming year,” Alesch said.  “We feel our freshman class is very strong plus we return 6 National Qualifiers including champion Freddie Rodriguez.  With the experience of the national tournament and several other sophomores still on the roster we will have great leadership taking us into the year.  There is a lot of work to do from now until February, but we like where our program is headed.”
