Iowa Lakes Men’s Basketball Sophomore Signs NCAA Div. I

November 19, 2013

Last Wednesday was the first signing date for NCAA Division I and II men’s and women’s basketball programs.  Iowa Lakes Community College men’s basketball sophomore, Deondre Parks, signed his letter of intent to continue his career at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D.

“Very proud of Deondre and him developing into a Division I college basketball player while at Iowa Lakes,” Head Coach Troy Larson said.

Parks, a 6-foot-3 guard from Flint, Mich., was a third team All-American selection for NJCAA Div. II last season.  Averaging 15.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in leading the Lakers to a 26-8 record and an ICCAC regular season title, the Region II championship and a berth in the national tournament.

“He has worked hard both on the court and in the classroom resulting in him signing,” added Larson.  “He is joining a good program in South Dakota State and should fit in well with their program.”

South Dakota State won their second straight Summit League Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berths last season while finishing 25-10 on the year.

Deondre wanted to find a place that fit his needs.

“I chose to attend SDSU because Coach Nagy and Coach Klinkefus made me feel welcome and if I continue to work hard I will be able to make an impact on the floor right away for a great program,” Parks said.  “Not only will I learn as a basketball player I feel like I will become a better person also.”

The Jackrabbits head coach of 19 seasons, Scott Nagy, had this to say about signing Deondre.

“He was a third team All-American last year as a freshman at Iowa Lakes, so he has high expectations and we do as well.  He’s a smaller guard in terms of what we’re used to, but he’s really a good shooter and ball handler, he’s aggressive, which in today’s game is very important just because the way the games are being called.  Deondre’s going to end up scoring a lot of points because he’s going to get fouled a lot.”
