Iowa Lakes Community College Celebrates Arbor Day with Area High Schools

May 2, 2013

Arbor Day was celebrated with several area high school FFA students recently with the planting of a tree in cooperation with the Landscape & Turfgrass Technology program at Iowa Lakes.

Kevin Fehr, the instructor of the Landscape & Turfgrass Technology program, delivered trees to local schools to help celebrate the 141st annual Arbor Day, which took place on April 26.

Fehr delivered two different kinds of trees and also talked about the importance of planting a variety of trees. He also discussed the need for planting trees and the benefits trees provide. At the schools where a tree was planted, Fehr demonstrated the correct depth for planting and talked about providing continued care for newly planted trees.

On Thursday, April 25, Fehr donated a Red Oak to the Estherville Lincoln Central chapter. Time was spent in the greenhouse with the Horticulture class and then the tree was planted with students in the Animal Science class which is taught by Jason Holt.

Also that day, Fehr traveled to Okoboji where he met with high school seniors and talked about tree care.  He left a ‘Firefall’ Freeman Maple tree with instructor Rich Martin which the students planted the following week.

On Friday, April 26, he planted a Red Oak with the Spencer Landscaping class and instructor Keaton Hildreth.  Later that afternoon, Ashley Wiebe and her Graettinger-Terril FFA students spent two class periods talking about tree care and planting a ‘Firefall’ Freeman Maple.
