Iowa Lakes Collaborates with Snap-On® Incorporated

The Board of Trustees of Iowa Lakes Community College met Tuesday afternoon and approved an agreement with Snap-On® Incorporated. 

The contract accomplishes several purposes related to the Iowa Lakes Renewable Energy Center.  Iowa Lakes can offer “train the trainer” sessions to business and industry, specifically for electronic measuring equipment.  Iowa Lakes is then recognized as a Snap-On® industry trainer in the areas of torque and multimeter.  The college anticipates offering industry training in the near future with instructors who are already certified in those areas.

The arrangement also allows the college to utilize the Snap-On® brand in conjunction with its industry training programs, which enhances the value over other industry training programs.  

Also, the agreement allows Iowa Lakes to purchase Snap-On® equipment at discounted prices.  The Snap-On® equipment will not only be used for the industry training, but also for the college’s related credit programs such as Wind Energy and Turbine Technology.

In Human Resources action, the Trustees approved a voluntary early retirement plan.  Staff members are eligible for the plan if they have 10 years of full-time service and are at least 55 years old.   The plan includes a financial incentive that is based on their salary and includes single insurance until the individual is Medicare eligible. 

Julie Williams, Executive Dean of Students, introduced the Iowa Lakes Report which featured ‘Competitive Dance’ – the college’s newest athletic program.  Coach Danie Juhl told the Trustees that fall try-outs were held earlier this month and the team is now holding practices.  Six of the nine team members were welcomed to the meeting by the Trustees.

The team will perform at the last home volleyball match on Wednesday and hopes to attend most home sporting events.   In November, the Competitive Dance Team will participate in its first competition.  In addition to coaching this year’s team, Juhl is also working on recruiting new student-athletes for next year.  

One new faculty member was introduced to the Trustees by Mark Gruwell, Executive Dean of Instruction and Development.  Chris Gerstbrein is the new criminal justice instructor and is based on the Estherville campus.

From the Institutional Advancement Office, Jolene Rogers, Executive Director, updated the board members on upcoming events.  They include the Car Cruise on Saturday, Sept. 22 and the Fine Arts Scholarship Fundraiser at the Pearson Lakes Art Center on Oct. 6.

She also reminded everyone that scholarship applications will close at midnight on Oct. 1.  Those scholarships will be awarded for the spring 2013 term. 

The Trustees heard from Delaine Hiney, Executive Director of Facilities Management, who updated them on college projects.  She first asked for a change order on the Emmetsburg access road project for less than $700.  And, she advised the Trustees of an approximate $25,000 project to increase the size of the concrete pad that contains beef feed commodities at the Farm Lab.  Both requests were approved.

In other business, the Trustees approved training agreements, conducted regular monthly business and heard reports from state and regional groups.

The next meeting of the Iowa Lakes Board of Trustees will be Tuesday, Oct. 16 in Estherville.
