Dignitaries from the Republic of Turkey were in Estherville Thursday to learn more about the Wind Energy and Turbine Technology program at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Yavuz KAVAKLIOGLU, Director of Nigde-Bor Industrial Zone, was designated as the official representative of the Republic of Turkey; and Erol GUNALAN, of Antalya, Turkey, was at the meeting as the co-founder of Renewable Energy Systems, LLC. His partner, Ethan Hunter, is an Iowa Lakes Wind Energy student. Hunter is expected to complete the Wind Energy and Turbine Technology program, earning an Associate in Applied Science degree, in May, 2013.
The guests were given a tour of the wind facility in Estherville. During the tour, instructors outlined the curriculum of the acclaimed program which is recognized throughout the nation for producing high-quality graduates.
The Iowa Lakes Wind Energy and Turbine Technology program is one of the first in the nation to earn the American Wind Energy Association Seal of Approval.
“Because of the global respect for Iowa Lakes, we want to model the Wind Academy Turkey structure after the program,” said Hunter.
While here in the United States, Hunter took the two dignitaries to the Iowa Wind Energy Association’s annual conference in Des Moines so they could get a better understanding of the impact of wind energy in Iowa. They also had a chance to meet industry representatives as well as manufacturers of wind turbines.
During their time at Iowa Lakes, the visitors held several discussions with instructors and members of the college administrative team. They also had an opportunity to meet with College President Valerie Newhouse, Board of Trustees President Janice Lund and Board Member Dave Gottsche.
Thursday’s exploratory conversations were focused on the establishment of a Wind Academy in Turkey by Renewable Energy Systems, LLC. On hand for the discussions were Travis Clendenen and David Easler of Vestas, a manufacturer of wind turbines.
Hunter attributes Wind Instructor Craig Evert (who passed away in February) with being one of his mentors for the project, encouraging him to pursue his dream.
The dignitaries returned to the Republic of Turkey over the weekend.
