Come celebrate the reason for the season at the Community Advent Celebration at the Sami Center for the Performing Arts, Spirit Lake. Several area churches and local musicians will join Iowa Lakes Community College music students for the concert of lessons and carols at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 9.
Carol Ayres, Professor of Instrumental Music at Iowa Lakes Community College and Adult Choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake, is the coordinator of the event this year. It was started two years ago by Jenna Hardy Petersen and Jennifer Johnson Heller.
“It was such a great gathering of community talent to celebrate the reason for the season, we thought it needed to continue!” commented Ayres.
In keeping with the tradition, choirs from First Presbyterian Church in Spirit Lake, Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake and Iowa Lakes Community College will each be performing a selection. Plus the Men’s Quartet from First Presbyterian Church and the Handbell Choir from Iowa Lakes Community College will also be adding their special touches. There will also be a massed choir, made up of the previously mentioned choir members, individual choir members and brass, woodwinds, handbells and percussion from several other area churches, joining their forces for several numbers.
Guests can arrive early and listen to the Iowa Lakes Community College Brass Ensembles play Christmas Carols. The concert will conclude with Joy To the World as an audience participation carol.
The concert will take a free-will donation, and is open to the public.
