In honor of veterans attending classes at Iowa Lakes Community College, student senators and staff members are organizing special events as Veteran’s Day approaches.
All campuses have decided to sponsor ‘Honor Trees.’ Multi-colored ribbons are placed near the Honor Trees and signs next to the trees encouraging students, staff and faculty to tie various colored ribbons to the trees to recognize those who have served, as well as those currently serving in the U.S. military.
White ribbons are in memory of a family member or friend who gave (or lost) their life in service to America. Blue ribbons are in honor of a family or friend who is serving; while yellow ribbons show general support to veterans. Black ribbons are to recognize a POW/MIA; red ribbons are for Iowa Lakes students (or community members) currently serving (or who have served); and purple ribbons are in honor of Purple Heart recipients.
Campuses in Algona, Emmetsburg, Estherville and Spirit Lake have started the colored ribbon campaign with Honor Trees.
The Spencer campus will launch its Honor Tree on Veteran’s Day where the student senators have organized an 11 a.m. ceremony recognizing veterans who have served the United States. The tree will remain up through November.
In Algona, students have been placing messages in a ‘Veterans Thank You’ box for the past two weeks. On Monday, Nov. 11, the student senators will be at the Hy-Vee Veteran’s breakfast where they will hand out the thank you cards along with either a Hershey’s Kiss or Hershey’s Hug.
The Estherville campus is also planning a ceremony honoring veterans which will be held on Monday. Plus, Deb Tietje, Veterans Service Officer from Emmet County, will be on campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to acknowledge and interact with veterans.
Additionally, all veterans associated with the college have been invited to send pictures from their time in the service to Emily Parrott, (email@example.com), to be displayed on the digital signage around the campuses.
Again this year, the student senate in Emmetsburg will donate $150 to provide holiday wreaths throughout the coming year at the Veterans Memorial in downtown Emmetsburg.
Finally, student senators are offering free meal coupons to be used on Veteran’s Day by those veterans attending classes at the Emmetsburg and Estherville campuses of Iowa Lakes. The veterans each received a handwritten note from a student senator or staff member thanking them for their service and including the free meal ticket.
At Algona and Spirit Lake, veterans will be recognized with coupons to Subway; at Spencer, veterans will receive a free meal at The Dock, which is operated by Hy-Vee.
“Please join us in recognizing and honoring the sacrifices of those who ensure our freedoms on Nov 11th – and for the remainder of this month,” said Kent Schmidt, Career Resource Center Coordinator, and one of the participants on a veterans committee at Iowa Lakes.
