The Iowa Lakes Foundation offers three
music scholarships: the Gaarde-Hinsch Scholarship, Music
Department Scholarship and the Tom Spalding Memorial Scholarship.
Gaarde-Hinsch Scholarships
Bertha and Delbert Hinsch of Estherville established the
Gaarde-Hinsch endowed scholarship for the benefit of student
musicians at Iowa Lakes Community College. Their great love of
music inspired the couple to establish this generous gift which
awards numerous music scholarships each year.
Deadline: April

Music Department Scholarships
This award is provided to talented and promising young musicians
whose academic qualifications and demonstrated musical abilities
indicate that they could make a significant contribution to the
music program of the college. The amount of these awards is
determined by several factors including student ability, financial
need and specific needs within each ensemble. One of the two
requested references must be from your school music instructor or
private teacher.
Deadline: April

Tom Spalding Memorial
Family and friends of Tom Spalding established this scholarship in
2008 after he passed away following a short illness. Spalding was
the Director of Records and Registration at Iowa Lakes Community
College from 1981 to his retirement in 2002. Following his
retirement, he continued his commitment to Iowa Lakes by
participating in the jazz band and teaching students to appreciate
music as much as he did. His love for music and students was an
incredible asset to the college, especially the Music
Department. Eligible candidates must audition and be accepted into
the Iowa Lakes Community College Jazz Band. Two recipients will be
selected annually and must use the award for tuition, books and/or
fees.

Amount: Two - $250
Blue Note
Club
In years past, a group called the Friends of Music supported
the Music Department and student-musicians with their
generous contributions and donations. Due to a tremendous need by
our students, we are bringing that group back to life and renaming
it the Blue Note Club.
At Iowa Lakes, we believe the greatest
gift a student can receive (besides an awesome education!) is a
scholarship. Scholarships provide tremendous opportunities and
financial assistance to deserving students. Your gift to music
scholarships through the Blue Note Club will make a significant
difference in the lives of our student-musicians and ensure that
deserving students who wish to attend Iowa Lakes are not left behind
because of economic constraints.
More than 70 percent of the students who
attend Iowa Lakes Community College qualify for financial
assistance. They are hard working student-musicians who are simply
trying to improve their lives by furthering their education. Most of
our student-musicians have jobs and work outside of school to make
ends meet. For them, a scholarship could move them toward graduation
and a job that would make them productive citizens, plus allow them
the opportunity to be part of the Music Department and the various
ensembles. The Iowa Lakes Music Scholarship Fund has been very
important to all who benefit from these scholarships.
The Blue Note Club is comprised of
four different levels of support: Prodigy - donations of $99 and
under; Composer - $100-$249; Virtuoso - $250 - $499; and Maestro -
$500+.
Scholarship donations to the Iowa Lakes Foundation ( Music
Scholarship Fund) are tax deductible to the full extent of the law
under Section 115 of the Internal Revenue code. Please contact Judy
Klunder, 712-362-7972 or
jklunder@iowalakes.edu for more
information.
Music scholarship auditions are held
during the first week of each semester. Students interested in
auditioning at another time can also email
cayres@iowalakes.edu (for instrumental auditions) or
bfuelberth@iowalakes.edu (for vocal auditions).
