My name is Tyler Crew, and my experience
at Iowa Lakes was great. The faculty is superb and is always
willing to help students "one-on-one." I went there to prepare
myself for further education in music and found myself quite ready
when I left. Also, the building has a really comfortable feeling
and the other students are nice and willing to help. I'm glad I
chose Iowa Lakes and don't know where I'd be if I hadn't.
Tyler graduated from Iowa Lakes in the
spring of 2002 with an Associates of Arts degree in pre-Music.
After Iowa Lakes, he attended the University of Northern Iowa School
of Music and graduated from UNI in the spring of 2005 with a
Bachelors of Arts in Music, specializing in Theory and Composition.
Tyler has had works for stage/performance performed in Canada, New
York, all over Iowa, and in Romania. His favorite styles to write
for include: percussion ensembles, piano, string quartets, and piano
quartets, as well as avant-garde and serial pieces. He studied
under widely recognized composers and performers such as Dr. Lathon
Jernigan, Dr. Alan Schmitz, Dr. Jonathan Schwabe, Sean Botkin, and
Howard Abel.
Tyler is currently a member of the Iowa
Composers Forum, as well as a music producer for Cohesion
Productions. He also runs his own composition/production studio
known as B26 Studios. As well as privately teaching piano and
theory/composition. One of Tyler’s compositions, the Heart of Orion
(composed for synthesizers/sequencers) was recently selected for
performance at the 41st Beethoven Club concert for the Iowa
Composers Forum, of which he is a member. This is the 3rd
consecutive piece of Tyler’s which they have performed.
I couldn't have done any of this without
the experience and knowledge I gained from Iowa Lakes Community
College.

My name is
Selena Diischer and I attended Iowa Lakes Community College from
2001-2003. During my time there I was actively involved with the
music program and participated in almost every single performance
group I could find. I also washed dishes in the cafeteria (the old
one) and cleaned dorms in the summer. After I graduated I
transferred to Western Illinois University to major in Music
Therapy. I recently graduated and completed my internship at
Opportunity Village in Clear Lake Iowa. Being back in Iowa has
given me the chance to visit Iowa Lakes and see many of the friends
that I made there. I met my best friend, Khanya from South Africa,
who also attended Iowa Lakes; and we talk almost every day.
Attending Iowa Lakes was one of the most rewarding experiences of my
life. I made friends that I keep in contact with to this day, which
is now many years later. In fact, I’m closer to the friends that I
made at Iowa Lakes, than the friends with whom I’ve attended the
four year university.
I graduated
in May with my Bachelors of Music Therapy Degree from Western
Illinois University, and since then I have been working hard at
finding a job that I know that I’m going to love. I recently
accepted a job in Cleveland, OH doing music therapy with a company
called Music Therapy Enrichment Center. I will be working in
schools and homes with children with varying degrees of
Developmental Disabilities and Autism.
Choosing a
memorable experience at Iowa Lakes is like asking music majors what
their favorite piece of music is. It is very hard to do. One of my
favorite experiences at Iowa Lakes was choir tour. My second year
there we went to San Antonio Texas, which meant we spent
approximately 18 hours on a bus. It was well worth it. I remember
having a great time with my friends exploring the sites and sounds
of San Antonio, meeting new people, shopping (always a joy!),
attending concerts and just being a college student in a fun town.
I also remember sleeping on the floor of the bus the 18 hour trip
home! It was a great time, with great people. Another highlight of
Iowa Lakes was the Madrigal Festival which was always a blast! A
lot of time and work went into it, and there were several times when
we were a little panicked but every time it came off without a
hitch. I am truly thankful that I got to experience the joys of
Iowa Lakes, and now my little brother is following in my footsteps.
Iowa Lakes was not just a college for me and my family (my other
brother attended the Emmetsburg Campus), it was a second home.
