NJCAA National Results - February 2013

Nick Lawrence finished 3-2 and earned All-American status by placing 7th at 174 pounds.
Glenn Cothern at 197 pounds went 2-2
Nate Lawrence at 165 pounds went 2-2
Jeff Erickson at 285, Dylan Konechne at 125 and Skyler Rice at 133 all went 1-2 on the weekend
Alex Anderson at 141, Travis Johnson at 149 and Ethan Lindquist at 184 all went 0-2 on the weekend.

Team finished in 25th place with 20 points.
North Idaho and Labette tied and were crowned Co-Champs.

“The weekend did not go as good as we hoped.  All of our guys could have wrestled better and when you don’t perform at your best when it means the most it is always disappointing.  We were capable of doing better and we didn’t.  The things the guys need to do now is take that feeling they have from under achieving and use it as motivation to work harder for next year and to be sure it doesn’t happen again.  This is a great group of young men and I think they will do just that,” Coach Alesch.

"We had a slow start to the day but the guys fought back hard in the late rounds.  The next couple weeks we need to improve on a couple areas so we don't have that slow start. " Coach Alesch

GrandView Open in Des Moines on Saturday January 26, 2013

"I thought the guys wrestled hard and we came away with some good things on Saturday.  We have competed in some strong Opens all year but none of them were as strong as GrandView.  Several Div. 1 teams such as IA St., Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri and Northern Iowa had several wrestlers there plus GrandView who is the top team in NAIA it makes for some very competitive wrestling.  The guys fought hard through out the day and that was the type of competition that gets you ready for National Tournament time," Coach Alesch.

Skyler Rice was the lone placer and had a great day making the Semi-finals before losing to Iowa wrestler Cory Clark by fall.  Skyler then won his next match which set him up for the 3rd place match but came up short and ended the day with a strong 4th place finish.

Other guys with strong efforts were Nick Lawrence  at 174 lost just one match before placing and went 4-2 on the day.  Glenn Cothren at 197 and Jeff Erickson at HWT both went 2-2 on the day and wrestled well.

This coming week the wrestlers travel to take on NIACC on Thursday night  in Mason City before heading down to Iowa Falls to take on Ellsworth Friday night to conclude the regular season.  Regionals are set for Sunday  Feb. 10th on the Ridgewater Community College campus in Wilmar, MN.

We did some goo things today but also saw some area's we need to improve on.  We need to get better off the whistle on bottom and increase our intensity with more physical wrestling.  We were more physical later in the day and we wrestled at a higher level immediately when we did that.  At 157 lbs James Smith got a big win 15-7 over the top ranked wrestler in the nation.  James has struggled from time to time with finding himself on the mat.  Today he showed the potential he has with a convincing win over a very quality wrestler.  A few guys Nick Lawrence, Cody Cline and Skyler Rice had good days going 3-0.

Iowa Lakes – 7th place finish with a 1-2 dual record at the National Dual Wrestling tournament in Springfield, IL over the weekend.

Dual results:
1st rd- Labette= 37, Iowa Lakes =6
Consolation Rd.- Lincoln=23, Iowa Lakes=12
7th place match- Iowa Lakes=36, Neosho=9

Labette dual-
We had a tough first round draw with top-seeded and 2nd ranked Labette College.  We wrestled better in this dual then the team score showed but at the same time we were capable of wrestling better in the dual.  When you have opportunities to wrestle good teams you want to perform at your best and take advantage of those opportunities and we did not do that.

Lincoln dual-
We were flat in this dual and lost to a team we were capable of beating.  We lost two OT matches along with two 1 point matches because we did not wrestle for 7 minutes.  In this type of event you simply need to fight and wrestle for 7 minutes and several guys failed to do that in this dual.

Neosho dual-
To end the day we wrestled better and won some of those close matches and we did a better job of wrestling for 7 minutes.  We still had some weights where we struggled  still but overall it was a much better team effort.

Coaches Comments:

“The team score doesn’t indicate how we wrestled tonight.  We lost a lot of close matches and fought hard throughout the night.  IA Western has a very solid team and we were out matched several times but I was proud of the kids on the way they battled at all times,” Coach Alesch.

December 1, 2012

Team placed 8th out of 13 teams and placed 2 individuals in the top 6.

Nick Lawrence placed 2nd at 174 lbs losing 3 to 4 to Thomas Mooman of Grandview James Smith placed 6th at 157 lbs.

We had a day where I thought all the guys wrestled hard except for a few occasions.  Nick wrestled well all day and was close to capturing his first Title of the year.  James wrestled well to start the day then struggled late, James will be moving down to 149 lbs after x'mas and that will be good for him.

Another guy that wrestled well today was Glenn Cothren at HWT.  Glenn has improved greatly over the last few weeks and was one match from placing on Saturday.  Glenn is moving down to 197 so he is very undersized at HWT but when he gets to 197 after Christmas it will pay off big for him.

We still need to pick up our intensity and get better everyday as we move into our last week of competition before Christmas break," Coach Alesch.

Coaches comments:

For the most part I thought we wrestled well.  We had a few matches were we did not perform well at all and those guys know who they are.  We have got to pick up our intensity as we move forward.  The guys fought hard in several occasions where we have not earlier in the season so it was good to see us moving in the right direction.  We had our opportunities but did not seize them like we needed to against a good team like Iowa Central ,” Coach Alesch.

November 17, 2012: Cobber Open

The Iowa Lakes Wrestling team competed in the Cobber Open on Concordia College Campus this past Saturday in Moorhead, MN.  The Lakers were able to place four individuals in the tournament with Ethan Lindquist leading the way with a 2nd place finish at 184 lbs. Riley Edwards followed up with a 4th place finish at a 184 lbs.  Nick Lawrence took 5th at 174 lbs and Jeff Erickson took 6th at 285 lbs.

"I was pleased with the team's overall performance.  I thought the guys fought hard and wrestled with intensity.  We got out wrestled at times but I think we took a lot away from the weekend and can apply that as we move forward.  There were a few Division I schools and several division II schools there so we competed against some of the best competition out there and in this part of the country.  Several guys were close to placing in the top 6 but came up just short.  We need to work hard over the next week and half as we prepare to travel down to Fort Dodge Nov. 28th to take on Iowa Central in a dual," Coach Alesch.

Coaches comments:

“I am glad the team opened up the season with a dual win in front of a great home crowd.  It was good to get the season going the kids have been looking forward to this dual for weeks.  I am surprised we wrestled as undisciplined as we did considering those things but we did.  Maybe we were looking forward to it more then we should have and were over excited, I am not sure.  We wrestled sloppy and many mistakes and they cost us tonight in matches that we should have won.  The boys need to step back and look at themselves and how they approached there matches and make some adjustments.”
Coach Alesch.
