Leah Courtney Signs With Iowa Lakes For Both Women's Basketball and Cross Country

May 4, 2012

Leah CourtneyA high school senior from Guthrie Center has signed to play two sports at Iowa Lakes Community College starting in the fall of 2012.

Head Women’s Basketball Coach Nicole Bullock and Head Cross Country Coach Molly Struve jointly announced the signing of Leah Courtney to a National Junior College Letter of Intent.

The 5’10” player has experience as both a forward and a guard.  Over her four-year high school career, Courtney averaged 11.1 points per game with a 42.5 percent field goal percentage and a 56 percent rate for free throws (74 percent in her senior year.)  She also averaged 7.8 rebounds, two assists and three steals per game.  She can also hit from the outside, averaging 33 percent in her senior year.

On the basketball court, Courtney has been selected as a first team All Conference player twice; named All District player twice; and honored as ‘player of the week’ for an area radio station the past two years.

Her basketball coach at Guthrie Center is Shane Rowlands.

“Leah is an outstanding addition to our program.  She brings size, athleticism and a high basketball IQ to our team,” said Coach Bullock.  “Her ability to play both inside and out on the perimeter will instantly make an offensive and defensive impact.”

While at Iowa Lakes, Courtney plans to also participate in Cross Country.

She has been the captain of the Guthrie Center Cross Country team for two years; received Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Academic Achievement awards for two years; was a first team All Conference runner; and was a 2011 State Qualifier.  While participating in track, Leah has qualified for the state meet all three years and earned a state medal in three different events.

“Leah will be a great addition to our team this fall,” said Coach Struve.  “She has a great deal of running experience and is a motivated, driven person.  I look for her to be a leader among our women’s team.”

Iowa Lakes caught Courtney’s attention because it gave her “the opportunity to play two sports while studying in the Athletic Training program.”  She plans to transfer to a four-year college after she receives her two-year degree from Iowa Lakes.
