Iowa Lakes Community College is hosting Des Moines Area Community College in a Women’s and Men’s Basketball doubleheader Saturday, January 5, at the Iowa Lakes gymnasium in Estherville. The women’s game begins at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m.

The Laker women are currently 5 – 11 on the season and 1 – 2 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).  They are led in scoring by Carla Barrera and Myangel Johnson, both averaging 10 points per game.  DMACC is 12 – 2 on the year and 1 – 0 in the ICCAC, currently ranked #17 in the NJCAA Div. The Laker men, coming off of a huge road win against the Kirkwood Eagles before winter break, will face another conference rival Saturday verse the nationally ranked Bears from DMACC.

DMACC, #10 ranked team in NJCAA Div. II, has a 12-3 record overall and 1-0 in the conference.  The Bears are led by 2 standout athletes, LaTree Russel and Darry Jones Jr., who are both averaging 13 points per game.  Jones Jr. also brings in 7 rebounds per game which is the 4th best in the conference.

Head Coach Troy Larson is expecting a great game.

“It should be a highly competitive college basketball game in Estherville Saturday,” he said.  “DMACC has a good program with legitimate players.”

Iowa Lakes is coming into the game with a 7-4 overall record, 2-1 in conference play.  The Lakers are led in scoring by Kelly Madison with 17 per game along with DreOndre Parks and Ben Shelim adding 12 apiece. The bigger the crowd; the better!

“We need a nice home crowd to be our “sixth man” on the floor for the game,” Larson said.  “Our guys are motivated to be back from break and are looking forward to Saturday.”
