American Volleyball Coaches Association Names Xiao Liang as Player of the Year for Two-Year Colleges

December 15, 2011

Xiao LiangIowa Lakes Volleyball standout Xiao Liang has been named the Player of the Year for two-year colleges by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Liang, a First Team All-American for two years in a row, is the first Iowa Lakes player to receive this honor.

She helped lead the Lakers to a fifth place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament and helped lead the Lakers to a combined 75-17 record over two years with two conference regular season titles, two region championships and two national tournament appearances.

In 2011 Iowa Lakes went a perfect 9-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, including Region XI-A Champions and ICCAC Champions.  She was named First-Team All-Conference and First-Team All XI-A Region.

In the NJCAA Division II Tournament, Liang recorded two, double-doubles in four matches, including two matches with 20+kills. Against Kishwaukee College, Liang smashed 20 kills and racked up another 17 digs.  However, that didn't even turn out to be her finest performance of the tournament.  Against Grand Rapids Community College the following day, she nailed another 22 kills and tallied another 18 digs.

For the season, she had 3.53 kills per set (18th nationally) and hit an astounding .420 (11th nationally).  But what is not to be overlooked are her defensive capabilities, averaging 4.56 digs and 1.86 blocks (4th nationally) per set.

“It’s been a pleasure working with Xiao the past two years,” said Scott Tschetter, Head Volleyball Coach for the Laker women.  “She’s been a great player and leader for the Lakers.”

This is a first-time achievement for the Laker Volleyball program.

“It’s been fantastic having had the opportunity to watch her play every day the past 2 years,” Coach Tschetter added.  “She’s an amazing player with so many different skills. On more than one occasion I’ve wondered how she does some of the things she does.”

The formal presentation of the AVCA Two-Year Colleges National Player of the Year will be made Friday, Dec. 16 in San Antonio, Texas, at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet presented by Zamst, held in conjunction with the 2011 AVCA Annual Convention and NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball National Championships.

Liang will be unable to attend because of previous travel plans.  Coach Tschetter will accept the award on her behalf.

Liang is a very social person and is well liked, according to Coach Tschetter.  In addition, she is very academically motivated and will likely graduate with honors.

After graduation this spring, she plans to transfer to Temple University in Philadelphia.
