Iowa Lakes Director of Athletics Troy Larson announced today that Shawn Semler was hired as the new softball coach for the Laker Women.
Before coming to Iowa Lakes, Semler spent eight seasons as head coach at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn., and is the program’s all-time leader in victories with 241. Prior to SMSU, Semler spent six seasons as head coach at College of St. Mary in Nebraska.
“Shawn is an outstanding teacher of the game and is a proven winner,” said Larson. “He is a very good recruiter who knows how to evaluate talent. Shawn will bring in the right type of student athlete to Iowa Lakes.”
Larson went on to reiterate the high expectations of the softball team. “Iowa Lakes softball has been one of the top programs in the country and I fully expect us to stay there under Shawn’s direction.”
Semler also has high expectations coming in to his new role.
“I am excited to be a part of a program that has such a great tradition of success. I came to Iowa Lakes to not only continue that success, but build on to it and keep the Lakers in the mix of the national rankings,” he said. “I want to thank Troy Larson and Iowa Lakes for giving me this opportunity and am excited to get started with our first practice this afternoon.”
The Laker Women went 27 – 12 last season with four first team All Region players and three second team All Region Players.
