The ICCAC All-Region teams have been announced and Iowa Lakes had seven players named with honors.
The Lakers had three players named to the first team. Taylor Mackey, a freshman and pitcher from Burnsville, Minn., had a 21-7 record and pitched 24 straight games for the Lakers.
Michelle Thille, a freshman from Santee, Calif., led the team with a batting average of .505 and 10 stolen bases from the leadoff spot. Sophomore Juila Rubek, Ralston, Neb., played great defense at first base and batted .500 with five home runs this season.
“I am very proud of all three women,” said Head Softball Coach Shane Bouman. “They worked hard all year and deserved to be awarded for their efforts.”
Named to the second team were: Hayley Condon, Santa Monica, Calif.; Priscilla Quintana, Bellflower, Calif.; Jayde Cherkas, Maryville, Mo.; and Carla Carrillo, Santee, Calif.
Condon, a freshman, batted .453 on the season with 44 RBIs. Quintana, a sophomore, batted .470 and had 3 home runs. Carrillo, a freshman, handled all the catching for the Lakers while hitting .419. Cherkas, a freshman outfielder, hit .425 and was always a threat on the bases for the Lakers.
“The future of the softball program is very bright, and 2010 looks to be another outstanding season,” commented Coach Bouman. “All five of our freshman earned All-Region honors and plan to return next season.”
The Lakers finished their season at 27-12 after losing to region champion Kirkwood last Sunday. To find out more about Iowa Lakes Community College athletics, please visit www.iowalakes.edu.
