Women’s Soccer Team 2012-13 Announced

August 15, 2012

The Iowa Lakes Women’s Soccer Team has been practicing for a week and is anxious to improve upon last year’s winning record.

This year’s team includes six returning players and 17 incoming freshmen.

Iowa Lakes Community College Head Soccer Coach Ammon Bennett expects big things.

“We are eager for the season to start as this group of players should be very competitive for us,” Bennett said.  “The returning athletes for the Laker Women s were all starters last year and helped us to a 10-7-2 overall record.”

The team finished the season in the regional semi-final game falling to Iowa Central 1-0 in double overtime.

“It was tough loss but I believe we will have a team that can win that game and even challenge for the conference and regional titles this season,” he said.

The top returning offensive players for the Lakers this upcoming season include Cortnee Sanchez (12 goals & 5 assists); Brittney Valentine (7 goals & 6 assists) and Salena Ramos (4 goals & 9 assists).  Top defenders returning are Jill Brockbank (Defensive Midfielder) and Danni Houston (outside back) and Natasha Litchfield in Goal.

“These returning players will have a huge impact for us and will definitely be challenged by the new group of incoming players,” Coach Bennett commented.  “It should make for some good competitive practices as each player will be challenging for the starting positions.”
Coach Bennett is looking forward to seeing his 2012 signees in action.

“Most of them come from good-sized high schools and almost all of them have played on competitive club programs,” He said.  “We really look forward to getting this team going and seeing how they do against some of the best programs in the country.”

The 2012 Women’s Soccer schedule has the team playing several top teams from around the region and nationally.  Iowa Western and Iowa Central are typically at the top of the league and usually hold some type of national ranking.  The Lakers also play Johnson County Community College, a team that just a couple of years ago played for the national title and Laramie County Community College a perennial top 10 program.

“The schedule is very competitive with our athletes playing six teams that usually are ranked in the top 15 in the NJCAA polls,” Bennett said.  “It should be a big step up for us in competition but if you want to be the best you have to play the best.”

The women’s team will have nine home events between the scrimmages and regular season games.

“We hope the community will come out and support our team as we look to have a great year,” he said.
