The Laker volleyball returns to the NJCAA DII National Tournament for the fifth consecutive year under head coach Scott Tschetter. The Lakers are the #3 Seed in the tournament that begins on November 17th at Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio. Iowa Lakes enters the tournament having a 7-4 record against teams in the field of 16.
Iowa Lakes By The Numbers
Iowa Lakes qualified for the national tournament finishing the regular season 32-8 overall, 9-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, Region XI-A Champions and ICCAC Champions. A sophomore dominated roster, Kellisha Harley, Xiao Liang, Le Mi were named First Team All-Conference and First Team All XI-A Region while Jade Black and Cayla Vimr were named Second Team All-Conference and Second team All XI-A Region. Five players on the Iowa Lakes team rank in the top 25 nationally in Blocks Per Set with #2 Mi, #3 Christy Wicks, #4 Liang, #8 Harley, and #25 Black. Harley also ranks #8 with 9.75 assists per set, while teammate Liang ranks #18 in kills per set with 3.48. Liang and Mi team up to rank #11 and #22 respectively in hitting efficiency.
The first round match-up is with Hagerstown Community College which was 27-7 during the regular season and a perfect 13-0 in the Maryland Junior College Conference. This will be the 9th consecutive year the Hawks have qualified for the NJCAA DII National Tournament. Freshman setter Paige Kitchen ranks #11 in the nation with 9.37 Assists Per Set.
Road To A National Championship
The Lakers have some tough competition awaiting them in Ohio. A possible second round match-up with Kishwaukee could be the rubber match on the season with the two teams splitting during the regular season. Both matches went four sets. The team that winds that match-up has 38-3 and #2 Seed Oakland Community College lurking on the same side of the bracket. The Lakers lost a tough four-set match to the Raiders on October 14th (28-26, 17-25, 25-17, 25-18). The National Tournament #1 Seed is Cowley Community College who owns two wins over the Lakers on the season. A three-set win on September 10th (27-25, 25-23, 25-21) and a four-set win on October 8 (25-14, 15-25, 19-25, 25-12, 15-13).
