Iowa Lakes Community College Women and Men Soccer have their season and home opener Friday, Aug. 23 at 6p.m. and 8p.m. respectively. The women play Waldorf College’s reserve squad and the men play Briar Cliffs’ reserves.
Head Coach Ammon Bennett is optimistic when asked about the women’s season.
“Although there are two other nationally ranked teams in the conference (Iowa Western and Iowa central), I think we have a great chance to get to the Region Championship game and a real chance to win it,” He said.
Leading goal scorer from last season, Lizzy Rasmussen, and the 6 other returners will bring a level of experience to the Lakers.
“These returning players will have a huge impact for us and will definitely help lead the new group of incoming players,” Coach Bennett commented.
The men are scheduled to play several nationally ranked teams like Laramie County, North Idaho and Oakton along with a very challenging conference schedule.
“The men face a tough challenge with two nationally ranked teams in the league (Iowa Western and Marshalltown),” Head Coach Bennett said. “The good news is we are much improved and a deeper compared to last year and we have hopes of advancing to the Region Championship game.”
To help anchor the defense for the Lakers is returning keeper Richard Nolasco.
“Nolasco is a solid keeper and great leader for our team, I am excited to see what this year brings for the men,” stated Bennett.
The schedule is a challenging one for the women and the men as it features several ranked teams.
“The schedule is highly competitive and should challenge us and hopefully prepare us for the post season,” Coach Bennett added.
