The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) will be returning its national wrestling tournament to the state of Iowa this year. It will be the first time that the event has been held in Des Moines since 2010.
The tournament will be held at the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center on the Iowa State Fairgrounds from Friday, Feb. 22 to Saturday, Feb. 23. The event will be hosted by wrestling teams in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), which includes Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Western Community College, Iowa Central Community College, North Iowa Area Community College and Iowa Lakes Community College.
“We are excited to get to Des Moines and see what we can do,” Said Head Coach Cody Alesch. “The athletes have great attitudes and are ready to make this their best performance of the year.”
Wrestlers will hit the mats for the first matches at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, with the top eight wrestlers advancing to compete in the finals on Saturday. With all the best NJCAA wrestlers competing in the tournament, the competition should be fierce. NJCAA wrestling fans should come out and check out the action.
“We have five sophomores who will be wrestling for the last time at Iowa Lakes and they want to make the best of it,” Coach Alesch added. “It is hard to believe that the year is coming to a close already but I believe the wrestlers are right where they need to be.”
