Several nationally ranked wrestlers will be in Spencer this weekend for the NJCAA North Central regional competition hosted by Iowa Lakes Community College.
The Spencer High School Fieldhouse will be the venue for the event which will feature five Iowa community colleges as well as five Minnesota community colleges.
“The event starts at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 16,” said Cody Alesch, head wrestling coach at Iowa Lakes. “Six of the 10 teams are ranked in the top 15 nationally. Plus, 30 individuals are nationally ranked.”
Alesch thanked the Spencer schools for their assistance.
“The Administrative team in Spencer has been great to work with and the Spencer High School Fieldhouse provides us with a great venue to put down three mats as well as provide plenty of room for fans,” Alesch said.
An estimated 85 wrestlers will be competing for a chance to advance to the National Tournament Feb. 28 and March 1 in Spokane, Wash.
“The top five at each weight class will earn automatic bids to the National Tournament making for a great day of competition,” he said.
“We encourage everyone to attend as it is a great opportunity for wrestling enthusiasts to see a lot of college wrestling typically not available to see in our area. And, we'd appreciate a nice crowd to cheer on the 'home' team Lakers,” Alesch added.
In addition to Iowa Lakes, colleges which will bring wrestlers to Spencer include: Iowa Central, Iowa Western, Ellsworth, NIACC, Minnesota West, Rochester Community College, Ridgewater Community College, Itasca Community College and Northland Community College.
Admission for the day-long event is $6 for adults and $4 for students 18 and under as well as Senior Citizens. Iowa Lakes students will be admitted free with a student ID.
