Iowa Lakes Wrestling Heads to National Tournament

Eight Iowa Lakes Community College wrestlers will join a total of 250 wrestlers representing 36 community colleges across the country to compete in the 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association Wrestling Tournament on February 24 and 25 at the Regional Sports Center at Rochester Community and Technical College.

Student-Athletes competing include:  Blaine Smith, Salina, Kan.,133 pounds; Skyler Rice, Sioux Rapids, 141 pounds; Brock Storm, Spencer, 157 pounds; Kolby Baier, Greenfield,165 pounds; Thomas Moman, Norfolk, Neb., 174 pounds; Nick Lawrence, Danville, N.H., 184 pounds; Regional Champion Matt Wyss, Boyceville, Wis., Heavyweight; and Regional Champion Jim Doyle, Canton, S.D., 197 pounds (will receive a first-round bye.)  

All eight men have never wrestled their first-round opponents in the past.

Coach VanGroll is confident the team is well prepared to compete at the national tournament.

"Our team is very well rested and fresh coming into the tourney,” VanGroll said. “Each athlete has been working on specific individual techniques to prepare to be at their best this Friday. We know it’s going to be a battle, and I am confident all eight guys can battle their way onto the podium Saturday.”
