The only two-time NJCAA Wrestling National Champ at Iowa Lakes has made the varsity squad at a NCAA Division I college.
Victor DeJesus won national titles in 2010 and 2011 in the 149 pound weight class.
DeJesus transferred to Arizona State University to continue his education – and his athletic career. To make the varsity squad, DeJesus participated in the annual Maroon and Gold Wrestle-off at the Riches Wrestling Complex in Tempe. He defeated red shirt freshman Joel Smith 7-4.
“It is always nice to see Iowa Lakes alumni continue to wrestle at the four-year college level,” said Corey VanGroll, Head Wrestling Coach at Iowa Lakes. “Seeing Victor succeed at the Division I level is a big deal for him personally and Iowa Lakes Wrestling. If Victor continues to do the right things, there is no doubt in my mind that he will reach his goals as well as represent himself, Arizona State, and Iowa Lakes well.”
The Lakers begin their season officially this weekend at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. Earlier in the week, student athletes on the Laker squad participated in an inter-squad dual meet at home to ‘warm up’ for this weekend’s competition.
