Eight Iowa Lakes Community College Swimmers and Divers Competed in the 2011- 2012 National Junior College Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships March 7-10 at the Anne Wilder Aquatic Complex, on the campus of Indian River State College, in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
In the first national action for the Iowa Lakes Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams, the men’s team took 9th place with 317 points and the women took 14th place with 69 points.
Top ten finishes for the Lakers were: All-American Matt Howell, Council Bluffs, taking 5th place in the mile; All-American Emalee Buchholz, Aurora, Colo., taking 8th on the 1 meter springboard; and the All-American 800-Freestyle Relay of Matt Howell, Council Bluffs; Mike Wickwire, Marshalltown; Mike Skiles, Scottsbluff, Neb.; and Tyler Brigham, Spencer; taking 8th place.
Coach Jordan was pleased with the national championships – and with the first season as a whole.
“Our team has worked very hard this year to get ready for the national championships,” Jordan said. “We went to the national championships hoping to prove ourselves being a new team, and I feel that we did just that. All of our Student-Athletes had lifetime best times.”
And this is just the beginning.
“I am excited to continue building and starting a winning tradition for Iowa Lakes Swimming and Diving based off of this first year’s performance,” Jordan concluded.
