Community College President's
Circle
In 2006 Iowa Lakes Community College President
Harold Prior established the President's Circle. The
President's Circle consists of donors that commit to
a minimum gift of $2,500 annually to Iowa Lakes.
Members are encouraged to allocate their gifts to
the area of the college that interests them the
most. Iowa Lakes is very fortunate to have many of
these donors realize the impact scholarships have on
today's students. Scholarships that have been
established or enhanced by the President's have been
identified with the

The Adult Learner Scholarship is given each semester
to one student at each campus. Applicants must be
at least 25 years of age, have completed at
least 12 credit hours at Iowa Lakes, show
evidence of superior academic ability and be
enrolled at any Iowa Lakes campus while maintaining
a 3.25 GPA.

Ag Processing Inc. (AGP®),
a farmer-owned cooperative engaged in the
procurement, processing, marketing, and
transportation of grains and grain products in
Emmetsburg, Iowa, has been a long time supporter of
Iowa Lakes Community College. Establishment of this
scholarship in 2008 is another show of their belief
in the college, its students and the ag industry.
Eligible candidates
must be enrolled full-time in the
Biorenewable Fuels Technology program and have achieved and
maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. They
must also address their interest in the
agriculture industry and career goals in that field
in the scholarship application summary. If
chosen as a recipient, they must use the award
for tuition, books or fees.

H.G. Albee, a former resident of the Estherville
area, created a trust to be used primarily for
scholarships. It was his wish that the Iowa Lakes
Scholarship Foundation administer the trust income
to the betterment of Iowa Lakes Community College,
but to be used primarily to provide scholarships.
Your application is evidence of his faith in Iowa
Lakes and the people who attend it. Applicants must
be attending the Estherville Campus.

The Mary and Gene Allbaugh Memorial Scholarship was
established by the Allbaugh children - Suzanne, John
and Kathy - all of whom lived in Emmetsburg and
graduated from Emmetsburg public schools. Mary and
Gene established and ran the radio station in
Emmetsburg, they were instrumental in bringing cable
television and the Iowa Lakes Emmetsburg Campus to
town. This scholarship has been established to
reinvest in the education of citizens served by Iowa
Lakes Community College. Qualified applicants must
be enrolled at any Iowa Lakes campus as a
full-time student, possess and maintain a GPA
in good standing. This award must be used for
tuition, books, and/or fees.

The Alliant Energy Foundation Scholarship was
established by the Alliant Energy Foundation in
2004. They will award two $250 scholarships to
full-time Iowa Lakes Community College students.
Applicants must be Alliant Energy customers or
dependents of customers, be enrolled in the
Wind Energy and Turbine Technology program and
demonstrate financial need determined by the
FAFSA form results. Applicants must supply a copy
of their most recent Alliant Energy bill.

This scholarship sponsored by the Iowa
Lakes Alumni & Friends Association benefits alumni
or children of alumni attending Iowa Lakes Community
College. Applicants must either be returning
alumni who last attended Iowa Lakes at least 2
years prior to start date OR children of
alumni. Children of alumni, include with
application alumni’s name, maiden name if
applicable, program and their year of graduation
from Iowa Lakes. Applicants must have attained at
least 30 credit hours from Iowa Lakes
Community College and
plan to enroll for at least 12 credit hours
during each semester of the scholarship year.

Family of Oliver M. Anderson
established this scholarship to keep memories of
their family alive while benefiting students at Iowa
Lakes Community College. Applicants must be
Estherville Lincoln Central graduating senior
athletes with a 2.5 GPA planning to be
full-time students at Iowa Lakes and
participate in an athletic program at the college.
The recipient may receive this scholarship for two
years while pursuing their education at Iowa Lakes.
This award must be used for tuition, books and/or
fees.

The ASPIRES Scholarship has been established for
active ASPIRES participants displaying focus and
commitment toward completion of their academic goals
at Iowa Lakes. The award is available each semester
for participating ASPIRES students who demonstrate
dependability, motivation and show potential for
success in reaching their educational goals. The
recipient must demonstrate financial need
determined by the FAFSA form results and maintain a
2.0 GPA.

Designed to assist students
aspiring to the nursing profession, this
scholarship was established in 2007 by Avera
Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa.
Eligible applicants must be full-time students
from Emmet County, Iowa, entering the
Associate Degree Nursing (Registered Nursing)
program at Iowa Lakes Community College
while maintaining a minimum cumulative 2.5
GPA. Preference will be given to applicants
displaying financial need determined by FAFSA
form results. The recipient must use the award
for tuition, books or fees.

Scholarship was established by Alyssa’s parents.
The Bargen Scholarship is awarded to a student

initiated by several Iowa Lakes employees to
honor and express appreciation for former
President Jim Billings’ leadership, vision and

Spencer Community Schools Foundation is designed

Ivan and Janet Brown along with
Brown Medical Industries in Spirit Lake, Iowa,
established a scholarship for GED or Alternative
High School graduates in 2007. Recognizing that
students that earn a high school degree through
these programs exhibit tendencies to value their
education the Browns wish to encourage these
students to “Just Say Yes” to continuing their
education at Iowa Lakes Community College.
Eligible applicants must have achieved a
minimum cumulative 2.5 during attendance at
their Alternative High School or GED program and
maintain a 2.5 GPA while attending Iowa
Lakes. They must also display financial need
determined by FAFSA form results.

The Ronald O. Brown Memorial Scholarship was
created in memory of Ronald O. Brown, an Iowa
Lakes alumnus from Gruver. This scholarship is
available for students enrolled in a health
field, vocational program or the
Environmental Studies program at Iowa Lakes
Community College.

The Melba Byrkeland Memorial
Special Needs Scholarship, established in 2007,
memorializes Melba’s dedication to helping
special needs students realize their career
goals. During her career at Iowa Lakes from
1972-1998 she was recognized by Presidents
Reagan and Clinton for her unique program
development based on her educational philosophy
of developing the “whole person.” A committed
mentor for other faculty, she helped develop the
first new faculty orientation, the Velkommen
Experience. Melba touched many lives, “making a
difference”, as if reaching out to others was a
way of life for her. Eligible candidates for
the Byrkeland Memorial Scholarship must be
former SAVE/COC students continuing their
education at Iowa Lakes Community College
while displaying financial need
determined by the FAFSA form results. A
preference will be given to those students
continuing on in the Iowa Lakes Hotel/Restaurant
Management program.

semester scholarship in memory of Louis D. &
Helen Casper, lifelong farmers. A scholarship
will be awarded annually to benefit a student in
an agricultural program at the
Emmetsburg Campus. The recipient must

the spring semester after attending Iowa
Lakes for at least one semester in an
agricultural program.

established a scholarship in memory of Maxine
Cass & Deanne Yackle. Eligible applicants must
be enrolled part time or full time in
either the Human Services/Disability Studies
program or in any Iowa Lakes program if

Clyde Christensen established the Clyde and
Frances Christensen Memorial Scholarship prior
to his death in 2002. The couple lived in the
Alta and Estherville areas. Frances attended
Estherville Junior College and received her
teaching degree. She later taught fifth grade.
Clyde spent his career working as a local DNR
officer. Clyde’s love of the outdoors inspired
him to establish a scholarship for students
seeking a career in an environmental area.
Qualified candidates must be enrolled in the
Iowa Lakes Environmental Studies program
and be in good academic standing.

The Ken Churchill - KICD Broadcast Scholarship,
sponsored by Spencer Radio Stations KICD/CD
107.7/Lite 104.9, was established in memory of
Ken Churchill, a long-time broadcaster at the
KICD stations. Qualified applicants must be
enrolled in the Iowa Lakes Broadcast
Media Specialist program as a full-time
student who has completed at least one
semester as well as possess and maintain a
GPA in good standing. Applications will
be rated on financial need determined by
the FAFSA form results with emphasis on the
summary.

The Iowa Lakes Community College Foundation,
with the support of several Clay County
businesses and community committee members,
hosts a golf outing to raise money specifically
for Clay County student scholarships. Many
community members and businesses attend and/or
sponsor the event. From this annual golf outing,
scholarships are made possible for students
meeting the following requirements: current
resident of Clay County, enrolled full time at
any Iowa Lakes campus and earned a high
school or college 2.5 GPA.

Corn Belt
Power Cooperative has partnered with Iowa Lakes
Community College to show its commitment to the
communities it serves and to the production of
renewable energy by offering a scholarship to
students who study
wind energy and turbine technology. Applicants
must have
achieved a high school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale,
and
maintain a 2.5 GPA
at Iowa Lakes (eligibility shall be reviewed each
semester). Eligible students must be Iowa residents enrolled
full time in the Wind Energy & Turbine Technology program at Iowa
Lakes. Selection emphasis will
be placed on applicant’s potential for success
and GPA. Scholarship must be used for

The William and Irma Cox Memorial Scholarship is
seeking eligible candidates who are Iowa Lakes
Upward Bound graduates attending any Iowa
Lakes Community College campus full time
in a transfer program (A.S. or A.A.
degree). The recipient must attain a minimum
GPA of 2.25 during their first semester at
Iowa Lakes and a 2.70 thereafter. One of
the recommendation letters or forms must be
from an Iowa Lakes Upward Bound
Advisor or Instructor, ACT scores, high
school transcript and a summary including
educational goals and how the student will work
to obtain them. This award must be used for
tuition, books and/or fees.

Wayne Davis, a great supporter of the Iowa Lakes
Agriculture Department, offered many students
part-time employment to help enhance their
college experience. As a community minded
individual he served on the Emmetsburg School
Board, the AEA Board and the Low Rent Housing
Board and was active in the Palo Alto County
Beef and Pork Producers as well as the Corn and
Soybean Association. His wife, Phylis,
established this scholarship in 2005 in memory
of Wayne, a devoted family man, innovative
farmer and steward of the soil. Eligible
students must be Iowa residents enrolled full
time in the second year of Agribusiness
Technology or Agriculture Production Technology
at Iowa Lakes Community College.

The Albert DeWall & Emma DeWall Peterson
Memorial Scholarship has been established by
Estherville Junior College alumna
Dr. Barbara Whitish Kuyper in memory of her
uncle Albert DeWall and aunt Emma DeWall
Peterson. Albert and Emma grew up on a farm near
Estherville and were lifelong residents of the
area. Applicants must display financial need
determined by the FAFSA form results and be
enrolled in any Iowa Lakes career option or
vocational/technical program as
part-time or full-time students.

Patrick Donovan devoted his entire life to his
family, friends and the automobile business.
After graduating from Estherville High School
and Estherville Junior College, Pat transferred
to Mankato State University. He enjoyed people,
telling great stories, Notre Dame football, his
Irish heritage and America. Family members have
established this scholarship to keep his memory
alive while helping students. Eligible
candidates must be full-time sophomore
students at Iowa Lakes Community College in
the Business Administration and Management
program with a 3.0 GPA. The award
must be used for tuition, books and/or fees.
One of the two required recommendation letters

advisor or professor in the Business

the Iowa Great Lakes area, the Pearsons are

late Don Hall, retired Marine/Small Engine
Mechanics instructor. He was head baseball coach
for Iowa Lakes and also scouted for the Dodgers
major league team. Applicants must be

Palo Alto County attending any Iowa Lakes
campus.

awarded during the 2008-09 academic year has
been established in honor of John Hand of
Emmetsburg, Iowa, in honor of his many years of
service as an Iowa Lakes Community College
Trustee. Hand served as Board of Trustees
President prior to retiring from the board
recently. Eligible candidates for this
scholarship must be Palo Alto County
permanent residents attending Iowa Lakes
Community College full time. The award may
be used for tuition, books and/or fees.

Kirk and Julie Hayes, long-time activists and
philanthropists from Algona, established this
scholarship in 2006 to further their support for
Kossuth County. Eligible candidates for the
Hayes Scholarship must have completed at
least 30 credit hours at Iowa Lakes and be

graduated from one of the high schools in
Kossuth County – Algona, Bishop Garrigan,
North Kossuth or Sentral.

The Tim Higgins Memorial Scholarship was
established by family in memory of a loved one
with a passion for farming. Tim Higgins of
Galva, Iowa, was a farmer involved in a fatal
accident at a young age. He truly felt farming
was a great way of life. The family felt that
Tim would have wished to give back to
agriculture and provide an opportunity for a
student to enjoy farming as he did. Candidates
must be full-time students in an
agriculture program, possessing a 2.0 GPA
or better. Students must display

endowed scholarship in support of Iowa Lakes
Community College. Merle (Bubs) L. Johnson and
Basil (Sonny) Roberts Sr. along with their

The Houseman family of Estherville established
this scholarship in 2007 as a memorial to their
father and founder of Houseman Oil Co., Loyd
(Bunny) Houseman. Bunny’s love for auto racing
led to a natural interest in auto repair and
fuel service; he started Houseman Oil Co. in
1946. Eligible candidates must be enrolled
full time in the Auto Technology program
at Iowa Lakes and use award for tuition, books
and/or fees.

The Matt Hunt Memorial Scholarship,
sponsored by PepsiAmericas of Estherville,
was established in remembrance of Matt, who
graduated from Iowa Lakes, enjoyed playing
baseball for the Lakers and was employed by
Pepsi of Estherville at the time of his
death. This scholarship will be awarded to a
returning sophomore baseball player who
graduated from a
high school located in Emmet, Kossuth, Clay,
Palo Alto, Dickinson or Martin
County. The selection committee reserves the right to extend this area if
deemed necessary.

Iowa Lakes Community College values its
alumni as an integral part of what has made
the college the outstanding academic
organization it is today. This scholarship
was established in 2006-07 to benefit
children of Iowa Lakes Community College
alumni. Alumni are defined as students
who graduated with a degree or diploma from
Iowa Lakes Community College. This award is
for full-time students and must be
used for tuition only. This scholarship is
renewable for a second year at Iowa Lakes.

Association is committed to promoting and
supporting quality education. Members are
full-time faculty at Iowa Lakes Community

Iowa Trust & Savings Bank of Emmetsburg,
long-time Iowa Lakes supporters, decided to
utilize their President’s Circle gift by
establishing this scholarship in 2008 to
support Iowa Lakes students. Eligible
candidates must be graduating seniors
from Emmetsburg Community School or
Laurens-Marathon Community School
planning to enroll full time.
Special consideration may be given to
students who possess the values that are
exemplified by the Vision, Mission & Values
of Iowa Trust & Savings Bank, attend the

his wife Cristina

to offer financial support to a
student enrolled in the Massage Therapy

Arthur Kahler established this scholarship
in 2006 as a memorial to his wife Mary.
Mary loved to travel, spend time with her
family, raise flowers, garden and entertain
her nieces and nephews at the farm she
shared with Art. She worked as a nurse for
over 43 years and was instrumental in
starting the Nursing program at Iowa Lakes.
Eligible candidates must be enrolled full
time in the Nursing program at
Iowa Lakes, reside in the college’s
five-county area (Clay, Dickinson,
Emmet, Kossuth or Palo Alto), possess and
maintain a 2.5 GPA and use award for
tuition, books and/or fees.

The family and friends of Jean King
established this scholarship in 2005 in her
memory. Jean taught nursing at Iowa Lakes
Community College for 21 years. She then
taught the RN/BSN program housed at Iowa
Lakes for the University of Iowa. Jean
greatly valued higher education and was an
inspiration and role model to those who knew
her. Eligible candidates must be
full-time
students in the
Associate
Degree Nursing program at Iowa Lakes
with a 3.0
GPA and be
Iowa
residents. The award must be used for
tuition, books and/or fees.

memory of Jens and Helen Kirkegaard of
Graettinger, Iowa. Jens, a Danish immigrant,
and Helen, a native of Canada, adopted

The KOFAB Welding & Metal Fabrication
Scholarship was established in 2004 by
KOFAB of Algona, a leading manufacturer
of custom food-processing and material
handling equipment along with new
product development. This scholarship
has been created to encourage students
to pursue a career in welding and metal
fabrication. KOFAB will annually award
one $1,000 scholarship to an incoming
freshman from each of these
school districts in Kossuth County -
North Kossuth, Algona, Bishop Garrigan
and Sentral. The candidate must be
enrolled in the Iowa Lakes Welding
program.
