Student Testimonial: Steph

July 26, 2011

A “traditional” college student is the term given to those students who graduate high school then enroll into college courses the following fall.

But, sometimes even ‘traditional’ college students can achieve success in non-traditional ways.

Stephanie “Steph” Carlson, of Spencer, has definitely achieved success in a non-traditional manner and has set herself apart from her peers in doing so.

Steph entered her freshman year at Iowa Lakes Community College with 45 credits already completed.

High school students have the opportunity to enroll in college credit courses while they are completing high school. The program is called dual enrollment.

Dual enrollment allows students in public and private high schools the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school.

By taking advantage of the dual enrollment opportunity, Carlson needs only 19 credit hours to graduate from Iowa Lakes Community College with both Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees in just one year.

It would normally take more than two years to complete both degrees.

Upon completion of her degrees in May of 2011, Steph plans to transfer to a four-year college where she will study exercise science & kinesiology.

Carlson has plenty to do while she is still enrolled at Iowa Lakes though.

A graduate of Spencer High School, Steph is a member of the Iowa Lakes Cross Country team which keeps her very busy.

In addition to college and running cross-country, Carlson also enjoys working out, being involved in sporting activities and spending time with her friends and family.

Carlson is an Infinity Scholar due to her high grades in math and science.

Stephanie Carlson can now place ‘actress’ on her resume.

She was nominated last fall by the staff at Iowa Lakes to be one of eight students featured in the 2010-2011 Iowa Lakes television commercials which air in northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota.

Carlson admits that she was “very nervous” but it was an exciting experience.

“The most exciting part of doing the commercial was being in front of the camera and having everyone watch,” said Carlson.

That is something that Steph is going to have to get used to because when you’re ‘ahead of the pack’ everyone watches.
