Web Development & Design

The internet was originally a tool of the military used as an information and communication device. When brought to the mainstream, many individuals created their own personal homepages and eventually businesses began to set up online stores. As high speed internet services increased in availability, video streaming and animation became more common on web sites. Now, so-called “Web 2.0” applications flourish and users are demanding an increasing level of interactivity from web sites. Blogs, social media, and rich internet applications are taking the World Wide Web to a place that was never envisioned by its original implementers.

Iowa Lakes Community College offers a program that meets the current and future needs of the industry. Students will learn how to effectively design web pages that are visually appealing and develop them to meet the functional needs of today’s users. Students will gain hands on experience building everything from basic web pages, to blog systems, to the social media functionality that has become so popular in the World Wide Web today.

Technical experience gained in the program includes:  HTML, CSS, JavaScript & PHP programming, along with database concepts. Students will use industry standard tools to assist them in all areas of the design and development process.

Graduates earn an Associate in Science degree after completing four semesters of coursework. Upon graduation, students are prepared to enter the workforce as a web designer, web developer, web master, contentment manager, etc…; with job descriptions such as maintaining an existing Web site, developing web projects, creating web graphics and writing code.

Note:  Many students deciding to pursue a 4-year degree dual major in Web Development & Design and the Associate of Arts program. These students later transfer to a university and major in graphic design or computer science. With careful advising and a rigorous schedule, the dual major option can be completed in 2 years.
