Catalog Description:  Environmental Studies Seminar II is an opportunity to prepare for participation in cooperative education and to develop a presentation to be made in a seminar format.  Emphasis is placed on continued development of job seeking skills, preparation for the Environmental Studies Practicum, and the skills needed to prepare and make a presentation addressing a current environmental topic.

Objective of Course:  The objective of this course is to prepare the student for participation in the Environmental Studies Practicum and to provide the student with the opportunity to prepare and make a seminar presentation.

Course Content:

  1. Cooperative education.

  2. Environmental Studies Practicum.

  3. Individual interviews with instructor.

  4. Student topic presentations.

  5. Practicum planning.

Method of Instructional Delivery:  There will be one hour of lecture, demonstrations, and discussions each week.  Also, various independent study assignments will be made during the semester requiring completion, as well as various class reports and individual presentations. 

Learning Objectives/Competencies:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the purpose of cooperative education.

  2. State the value and importance of cooperative education.

  3. List the responsibilities of the student, the sponsor, and the coordinator in relationship to cooperative education.

  4. Summarize the contents of the Student Manual for Environmental Studies           Practicum.

  5. Describe how to apply for and enroll in the Environmental Studies Practicum.

  6. Describe the duties, benefits, responsibilities, and qualifications of a specific           environmental career area.

  7. Describe the prerequisites which must be met before enrollment in the Environmental Studies Practicum can be completed.

  8. Complete the forms and contracts required for enrolling in the Environmental Studies Practicum.

  9. List their career preferences and explain why they have specific career preferences.

  10. Describe why they want a career in the environmental field.

  11. Describe the steps which must be taken to prepare a paper for presentation before a group of students.

  12. Present a paper dealing with a current environmental topic in a seminar setting.

  13. Prepare and assemble a portfolio with the materials needed to successfully apply for a job.

  14. Describe the traits and characteristics of an employee which will enhance their success while on-the-job.

Methods of Evaluation:  Evaluation of student performance will be based upon completion of assigned tasks and projects, presentation of reports, and attendance.  Students are expected to attend class except in cases of sickness, emergencies, and excused absences.  Students who miss class for the above reasons will be allowed to make up their work.

Grading:  Grading is determined by a percentage of total points for the semester.  Sixty percent is required to pass the course, seventy percent for a C, eighty percent for a B, and ninety percent for an A.
