Description:
Environmental Studies Practicum is an opportunity for students to gain
hands-on experience in a field and/or laboratory setting through a cooperative
education agreement between the college and the sponsoring agency, business, or
individual. The practicum is meant
to be an actual job situation in environmental technology or natural resources
management.

The objective of this course is to provide students with an opportunity
to obtain on-the-job training in his or her chosen career area.

Method of
Instructional Delivery:
On-the-job training in the form of employment with an environmental or
conservation agency shall be performed by the site sponsor.
The program coordinator shall work with the sponsor and student during
the on-the-job experience to insure that the student receives the training
needed to perform successfully their assigned tasks.
Learning
Objectives/Competencies:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
List the
responsibilities of the student, the sponsor, and the coordinator in
relationship to cooperative education.
Summarize the
contents of the Student Manual for Environmental Studies
Practicum.
Describe how to
apply for and enroll in the Environmental Studies Practicum.
Describe the
duties, benefits, responsibilities, and qualifications of a specific environmental
career area.
Describe the
prerequisites which must be met before enrollment in the Environmental
Studies Practicum can be completed.
Complete the
forms and contracts required for enrolling in the Environmental Studies
Practicum.
Exhibit the
qualities and characteristics which are expected of employees by employers.
Successfully
complete a minimum of 70 hours of work for each credit earned.
Complete and
submit the required paperwork, including weekly reports, during the
on-the-job training component of the Environmental Studies Practicum.
Prepare a report
outlining the student's experiences while on-the-job.
Methods of
Evaluation: Evaluation of
student performance will be based upon completion of the required number of
hours of on-the-job work experience, completion of required paperwork,
evaluation of the student by the site supervisor, and evaluation of the overall
experience by the program coordinator.
Grading:
Grading is determined by the overall performance of the student as
evaluated by the site supervisor and the program coordinator.
